farmer's market find: garlic scapes
this week’s adventure involved the humble garlic scape. for years, farmers would simply cut and discard these curly green stalks that grow out of garlic bulbs. i just noticed these at the market a couple of weeks ago, and recalled a piece in the nytimes that featured a number of garlic scape recipes. garlic scapes at their most tender are juicy and have a mild, spicy garlic kick right at the...

being mildly hypochondriatic, i am afraid that i will die of internal bleeding in my sleep from the tiny bits of what was possibly glass that i found in our vegetable korma at shalimar in ann arbor. i was so disturbed that i totally forgot to photo the shards.

farmer's market find: pea shoots
pea shoots were this week’s feature in “farmer’s market find: what is that and what do i do with it?” - my regular attempt to choose at least one thing at the FM with which i have no experience. i was drawn to these greens’ curly tendrils and had to inquire further.
what do you know, pea shoots are exactly what you’d think they are: the leaves of a pea plant...

why i food blog
recently, i mentioned something on this food blog to a friend. she admitted that she hadn’t kept up and said in a genuinely confused tone, “i don’t get it…”
she was referring to why i do this. why i catalog my mundane attempts at cooking. why i write lengthy accounts of meals at restaurants. why i take pictures of almost every meal that i eat (though i do exercise...

Father's Day Gift: Something sharp.
So I want to get my dad a chef’s knife for Father’s Day/his birthday. It would get A LOT of use. Something high quality but not ridiculously priced.
Any suggestions?

farmer's market recap
this early in the season, the FM is heavy on the plants and sparse on the produce. some of the lovely finds right now include spinach and asparagus. this gorgeous homegrown spinach was $1, and i couldn’t pass up one of my favorite superfoods.
sadly, my wallet couldn’t stomach (no terrible pun intended) the $4.25/lb asparagus below. the person hawking the asparagus gave K and I...
